We are passionate about providing treatment for those struggling with disordered eating, body image concerns and eating disorders, as well as improving the wellbeing of those experiencing a wide range of mental health and life’s challenges. We provide treatment and support across the age range, and offer evidence-informed treatment alongside a focus on understanding your particular context and needs.

What are EDs

Eating Disorders describe a set of complex mental health conditions, which carry a suite of physical and emotional consequences. Those formally diagnosed include:

  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Bulimia Nervosa
  • Binge Eating Disorder
  • PICA
  • Rumination Disorder
  • Avoidant and Restrictive Feeding/Eating Disorder (ARFID)
  • Other- or Un-Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders (OSFED/USFED)

Their causes are multifactorial, with no single origin, however, they typically emerge through a combination of complex risk factors which can include genetics and heritage, environmental experiences, psychological factors including some personality traits, and broad socio-cultural influences, such as the thin ideal or diet culture. There is no “one sized” eating disorder: some people may lose weight with an eating disorder, some might experience weight cycling, and some might gain weight. Eating disorders don’t discriminate meaning anyone at any age, and from any walk of life can develop an eating disorder. It is important to break down the stigma of eating disorders, including the commonly held belief that eating disorders are a choice, or a lifestyle. They are serious mental illnesses which carry significant risk. Equally importantly, recovery is possible, and finding a service which understands your concerns and knows how to help is vital.

We offer a range of treatments shown to be effective for those with eating disorders, including:

Adolescents

  • Maudsley Family-based treatment (FBT)
  • Adolescent Focused Therapy (AFT)
  • Cognitive behaviour therapy for ARFID (CBT-AR)

Adults

  • Enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy for eating disorders (CBTe)
  • Cognitive behaviour therapy for bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder (CBT-BN; CBT-BED)
  • Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM)
  • Maudsley model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA)

    Our Approach

Wherever possible, we aim to offer evidence-based treatment. That means working collaboratively with you to offer the treatments which have been shown to be most effective for your particular concerns, alongside what you are looking for, and informed by the approaches we are trained to provide. We take a personalised and comprehensive approach to your assessment, working to develop a rounded understanding of your concerns to guide the development of a treatment plan that will best suit your needs.

Our work is informed by the core principles of eating disorder treatment, including ensuring medical support is in place if that’s relevant to you; providing support if you’re struggling with motivation; and placing your needs, alongside a safe and trusting relationship, at the centre of your care.. As mental health clinicians, we pride ourselves on continuing to develop our knowledge, skill and understanding of clinical treatments through ongoing training guided by the research. That means your clinician will, at times, take leave to further their professional development. We also contribute to research: EBPW is a proud founding member of the TrEAT registry, the first national registry of eating disorder treatment data in Australia/New Zealand. TrEAT provides a snapshot of the care those with eating disorders receive and over time, aims to contribute to the improved quality of care available to all those seeking it.

At EBPW, we are committed to offering a trauma informed and affirming environment for all and tailoring treatment to your personal needs. And as a team, we strive towards a world free of weight- and shape-based (and other mental health) stigma, where we agree on the risks related to dieting and accept human diversity in all its forms. We work to create an environment that fosters trust, safety and the opportunity for personal nourishment and growth, alongside your treatment or recovery goals, making sure you feel heard and your treatment journey reflects your values and needs.
